Magneto-Optical Kerr Microscope

Description

The Kerr microscope is a facility for visualising magnetic domains and magnetisation processes in materials that show a magneto- optical Kerr effect. In this effect the polarisation of light reflected from a magnetic material is rotated by an amount that depends on the magnetisation direction. The Kerr microscope thus provides an optical image with magnetic contrast. Our microscope was commissioned from Evico Magnetics in early 2013 and can be used to study samples in a magnetic field up to 1.3 T in plane or up to 0.9 T out of plane, with simultaneous measurements of electrical transport properties.
